The new photos of objects in the field add richness. Its too bad the photo of the arrow on Nagog Hill Rd. isn't clearer. In the field one can see that it is a deliberately made arrow.

It's about a 5 inch fragment. So far I haven't been
to find anyone who can identify it. Any ideas?

A well constructed and interesting site. A criticism and a comment: I don't like your distinction between "exotic" and "crude" . This seems very subjective: who is not to say that a simple flake is not a very efficient tool that was exactly what was required at the moment? Does this justify a negative contrast with tools whose social and functional roles might have been entirely different?
Also, your "Oldowan chopper" is a type that occurs in many parts of the world. For example, similar cores/tools occur on the north coast of NSW concurrently with blade and flake industries.

I have found a stone in Chelmsford,MA about 7 inches long and about 5-8Ibs.
It fits in my hand very comfortably in two ways and has
some very sharp edges. It almost looks like a fin. I have no
knowledge in this field. But I some digital photos I would
love to email someone who is interested in looking at it and
tell me any details they know.
Thanks in advance

I'll comment later after reviewing more.

FANTASTIC! I'm amased - my intresset began with Thoreau which I read first time as a teenager (Walden) and then I read and reread Walden,CapCod aso. It's a little hard to get books and other writings here in Sweden but with www I get everything and more I want to know! And it is so nice to read more about your history too.My dream is that I one day can visit Walden, Concord myself. This summer my eldest son was there with his family so I got some nice pictures of him.

Some of your pieces aren't artifacts (like the granite 'axe' from the construction site that was in a pile of similar rocks) and a lot of other things you show. Also, you shouldn't make up names for things that aren't artifacts (like the eggdrop knives). All those are are 'geofacts', but I call them "Leaverites" as in "leave er right there, cause it ain't nothin!'" :)
You live in a bad part of the country for surface-hunting and your over zealousness has caused you to mis-identify a _lot_ of pieces. Good luck!

Great site guys, although it would be nice if it contained more pictures. I have been collecting for the past several years and have a large amount of tools that I have been unable to identify with any specifity. I have several books to use as identification guides, however, none indiginous to my area. If you have any suggestions for books or reference material related to Idaho artifacts, please let me know. Meanwhile, add more pictures..........please. Hope to hear from you.....

I am the son of the late Mark Strohmeyer. I would just like to correct you in saying he was from Watertown, not Arlington. The work that my Father did was very important to the present effort in conserving these sacred sites. He taught me most of what he knew and understood, and also left a lot of work for me to complete. If you have any questions or new issues to discuss, reach me at: Andres Strohmeyer, 60 Union Ave, Jamaica Plain, Ma 02130

some nice artifacts. lot's of rocks (non artifacts, it's funny how the mists of time obscure our memory and how hard we sometimes try to create something out of plain old new england stones......
thanks for stressing that even collecting must be done discreetly and digging is bad.

Hello, just came across this site this morning (8/22/99) Found it to be very informative. Good pictures. To expand info to other New England areas? I'd like to do some trades with other amat. arch. in New England. I have fossils (some rare), meteorites, and stone relics from many other areas, also Calusa Indian 2-hole drilled club from Fla. Would be interested in used books on relics and dig sites in New Eng. also esp. if have good photos, also old arch. journals. Hope to hear from other interested persons. I'm a member of Dr. Gramly's Amer. Soc. for Amateur Arch. Write me at 7 Smokey Ridge Rd. Ringwood, N.J. 07456-1901 Ken or E-mail me indian_dad@yahoo.com
Thanks! Would like sharing info and hearing from any of you. I'll be up to New Eng. this week or next. Hear soon!!!!!!!!

This is an amazing site. I would like to learn more. This area is threatened environmentally and you can find out more at saveourheritage.com .This reveals to me that the whole area is a historical treasure and needs to be protected.Who knows what else could be found there. It would be terrible to see this destroyed.

Being from the Paficic Northwest it was informative. I doubt I would ever be able to see such sites in the east, it was nice to see them on you web page. I am an amatuer arch. for my tribe (yakama) and we preserve and protect sites. It is our belief and policy to preserve and protect at the site, we do not take artifacts from their place. It is interesting to read some of the comments of people who think it is a way of preserving the past. I don't understand that concept. If someone can explain it more to me that would be very informative for me.

Good job with your site. Just passing thru, will have to look more closely later. I'm an amateaur enthusiest just searching for resources and so glad to find a local reference as I'm in Mass. as well. Always great fun searching!!! Wondering if you know of any sites that go into detail of the various stone materials found in Mass.?(pictures, descriptions, names etc.) I know what to look for just don't know thier names or origins(except some flints) Finding quite a bit of local material as well. Any assistance would be helpful. Keep up the good work!
